.IT ALL BEGINS IN THE 16TH CENTURY

A SINGULAR STORY: Santiago Cordero
Santiago Alonso Cordero (Santiago Miles, Lion; March 10th from 1793 - Madrid, October 23 from 1865) was an illustrious person in his time, owner of the Maragato House (Casa Cordero) located in the Sun Gate.1Character who had a certain political relevance within the liberals exercising as Deputy in Cortes for Astorga (in the period 1846 - 1856), being also a person of great fortune thanks to the business of transporting goods to the Capital. In the middle of the 19th century, he turned out to be a picturesque character because he always dressed in costumes maragatos.twoHis influence led him to be President of the Madrid Provincial Council. He died of anger in a epidemic that plagued Madrid Mid-nineteenth century
A First Prize
In a stroke of luck, Cordero won the Lottery in the early 1800s. It appears that the state did not have enough money to pay him. You can see that in Spain that cash was not used yet, so he gave him a little lot of nothing here, in the middle of Puerta del Sol, just before starting his remodeling. A trifle. And here, Cordero el Maragato promoted the construction of a whole block of private homes and commercial premises at street level, six buildings with 286 windows with which to look out onto Puerta del Sol.
The first Great block of flats in the Capital was built between 1842 and 1845, which served as a model for the rest of the perimeter buildings that make up the Puerta del Sol.
Ambitious Project
The house, designed and built by the municipal architect Juan Jose Sanchez Fisherman FIt was inaugurated in 1842.
In 1846, on the ground floor, the Fonda de la Vizcaína opened its doors, whose owner was Ramona Berdorrain; It was one of the first Madrid establishments to offer a "more European style" gastronomy, with less garlic and oil, and serving the menus on tables d'hôte. In La Vizcaína, he stayed in 1865 Hans Christian Andersen , on his trip through Spain; what he liked the most about Madrid was the Prado Museum. Today, a plaque remembers it. The English traveler William George Clark, author of Gazpacho: or Summer months in Spain, also stayed at that nineteenth-century inn.
